Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Hospice Care
What is hospice care?
Hospice care is designed for those facing the final stages of a life limiting illness, including but not limited to: heart disease, cancer, AIDS, lung disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. To find out whether you or your loved one qualifies for hospice care, please contact us and we will come to the hospital, nursing home, or your home to help you decide whether River Region Hospice care is right for you.
What is the cost of hospice care provided by River Region Hospice?
River Region Hospice accepts Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and private payment for hospice care services. Based on eligibility, Medicare and Medicaid cover 100% of the cost of River Region Hospice care services. Medicare and Medicaid cover all services related to the hospice diagnosis, including but not limited to: medications, medical equipment, nursing care, social services, spiritual services, and dietitian services.
Does River Region Hospice administered tube feedings?
Tube feedings are administered by River Region Hospice if they are part of the patient’s plan of care. The decision to administer tube feedings will be made during the patient’s needs assessment.
Can a patient receiving dialysis also receive hospice care?
Yes, as long as kidney failure is not the hospice diagnosis. The hospice care benefit only covers treatment of the hospice diagnosis. The benefit that paid for dialysis services prior to hospice treatment would continue to pay the costs related to dialysis.
Are antibiotics administered by River Region Hospice?
Antibiotics may be administered to help with symptom control.
Does hospice pay for all medications?
Hospice pays for medications required to manage the symptoms of the hospice diagnosis. Medications treating conditions not related to the hospice diagnosis are not covered under the hospice benefit, but should continue to be covered by the patient’s healthcare plan.
Can the patient continue to see their doctor while receiving hospice care?
Yes, the primary care physician may choose to continue following the case by either providing visits or communicating with the hospice medical director. River Region Hospice is happy to work with your doctor.
